Troy Oldham's Week 5 Post #2
I mentioned in last week's blog that I thought getting involved in sports PR would be a blast. I think my first client should be Isaiah Thomas. He is a walking PR nightmare. He is always getting into trouble and saying the most outrageous things. If he had any idea what a fool he is making out of himself he would pay me some of his millions to help him not look like an idiot. Add that to the fact that is one of, if not the, worst coaches ever to coach in the NBA. I also contacted my old high school's principal to see what the chances are that I could get involved in coaching basketball at the high school myself. I think I could really turn that program around.
Troy Oldham's Week 5 Post #1
This week we got into our groups for the final project. I am pretty excited about it. We are actually working with a real-life situation. We are in charge of Bestor's Best Singer Search. He is coming to Logan in a couple weeks so we don't have a long time. This is great experience because we are working with a PR company from the Salt Lake area and we have a super tight deadline. I was amazed by the people in my group. They all seem to know people that can help us out. We are teaming up with the Independent Music Club to do this. We are also going to try and get the music department involved as well. I think it is going to be a hit.

Troy Oldham's Week 4 Post #2
If I were to go on in my career and pursue a PR job, I would probably try and get on with a company that is up and coming. One that I found (probably a lot of other people found too) is Taylor. Although they did win the 2008 US Agency of the Year Award, they also won The Holmes Report's Midsize Agency of the Year award two consecutive years. This tells me that not only are they good at what they do, but they can only go up from here. Soon enough they will become one of the big agencies. This would probably be the ideal time to get on with a company like that. They deal in the sports and entertainment industries as well. It would be a fun place to work and never a dull moment.
Troy Oldham's Week 4 Post #1
As this assignment goes on, I continue to find more interesting things out about Public Relations. I don't know why it took me until now to start looking at public relations in sports, but I found a great website today that talks about what someone would do in sport with public relations. The website is http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/fall01/latimer/. He lays out four areas that you could work in: Player Relations, Community Relations, Media Relations and Investor Relations. I would love to be involved with sports-centered public relations. In fact, I plan on being a high school coach and I will learn some skills that will help me to get the publicity and funds for a fun time on the basketball team.

ICON HEALTH AND FITNESS TO SEND USU GRADUATE TO CHINA
ICON Continues To Offer Great Work Experience For Students
Taylor Price will finish his last three credits towards graduation online as he and his wife moved to China on Monday to start his new job as a manager.
Each year, Icon employs more students and gives them opportunities to prove themselves. Price did just that as he worked for Icon for two years, while going to school, before they decided to send him overseas. It is not just Price that has excelled while going to school. Many others have taken on the rigorous task of going to school and working full-time.
Icon Health and Fitness is one of the largest employers in the Cache Valley area and they continue to provide valuable, real-life experiences to students. Icon is flexible with students and willing to work around classes and homework to allow for ambitious students to better themselves.
Many start in areas such as customer service or product testing. Promotions are given to those that perform well and extensive benefits are available to those that work more than 30 hours a week. Along with the benefits, there are perks on the side; anything from discounted Jazz tickets to ski passes. There are company parties and retreats as well. Last year, Icon rented out Lagoon for the day and held the company party there.
While Price’s journey is only just beginning, many others can experience the same ride.
Job openings and internships are posted regularly on their website www.iconfitness.com.

Troy Oldham's Week 3 Post #2
Today I wanted to talk about why I wish that schools would require people to take at least one PR class. I found this on www.aboutpublicrelations.com. "When sending ideas via email, always include a short, pithy pitch along with your contact information. It is important to make the reporter’s job as easy as possible so make sure to provide the most important news in the first paragraph." Even if it does not deal with a reporter, this is the appropriate way to communicate. I feel like I have so many things going on in my life that I do not want to take the time to read through lengthy garbage. I want all the good, important stuff right up front. If everyone lived by this one principle of PR, then the whole world would be more efficient.
Troy Oldham's Week 3 Post #1
We had Tim Brown, from Richter 7, come and speak to our class on Thursday. I thoroughly enjoyed what he had to say. Not only was he very personable and entertaining, he also taught us a lot of valuable things. He talked a lot on internships and how to screw them up. Even though I do not have an internship right now, I was able to take what he said and apply it to where I work right now. I started a few months ago and I was really excited. The novelty has since worn off. While I still go in on time and get everything done on time, I have definitely had an attitude change. I need to work on that. I don't ever want my employer to think that I have given up or that I am getting a bad attitude on anything like that. He talked a lot about what PR is like at an agency. If I didn't already know what I want to do with my career, I think I would really enjoy working for them, or any other agency for that matter.

Shane Kreb's Reading Week of Oct. 12
I read the Conversational Terrorism one and thought to myself, who in the world has time to come up with stuff like this? I hope they got paid. There were a couple that were pretty funny, but I just like to tell it how it is. If I don't know the answer, I dont need to give myself time to make something up. I am also not in to the game of making other people feel stupid. I have a lot better things to do than to argue with people. The link bombing article was kind of funny in the same way. Someone with nothing better to do than to try and make someone else look stupid. While it may have been effective, what a waste of time. Those are my thoughts on the articles.

Troy Oldham's Class Week 2 Post #2
I haven't fully figured out how to navigate this PRNewsonline website, and maybe it's because I am not a member, but it doesn't seem to have much action at all. I found just one blog on there by a gal named Diane, and I only see posts from her once a week to twice a week. The comments are just as sparce. I just found another blog on there and nothing has been written on it for over 4 weeks. I believe that there is a bright future in PR, but it just doesnt seem like there is that much information out there on it. It seems to get burried behind a lot of other career choices. I did find one interesting point that Diane Schwartz made, "Have social media sites made people less friendly in person and more friendly online? To me, the scene was representative of the new Web 2.0: most people come to social media sites and soak in the information before them but don’t participate. And there’s the vocal minority who keep the conversation flowing and want to be heard. The more things change, the more they stay the same, when it comes to human nature." Kind of interesting to think about. And it seems oh so true.
Troy Oldham Week 2 Post #1
We talked in one of my classes the other day about jobs in PR. With the way the market is going, it is kind of scary that we may all graduate and not have jobs. My professor assured me that this is an area that is supposedly in high demand. I looked on prweekjobs.com and only found 20 in the whole country. NOw I know that this is not the only website that has job postings, but 20 on a PR site in the whole country is not very optimistic. Luckily I don't plan on going into the PR field as a career, I only majored in it so I could learn all the valuable things that are taught that pertain to writing and communication.
