Troy Oldham's Week10 Post #2

I just watched the news and was very impressed with the PR of a certain security company. Icon Securities in Provo, Utah, is under a lot of scrutiny for lying about their security systems. I feel like the spokesman was very prepared to answer the tough questions that came his way. They were very careful with the words used and they spoke of the punishments that had been given out to those salesman guilty of dishonesty. All in all it was pretty good. They made it seem like the whole problem was with salesman, but I find that hard to beleive. They had people from all over the country that had all been deceived by the same company. Sounds like more than a few bad eggs to me.

Troy Oldham's Week10 Post #1

Kurt Bestor's Best Singer Search is over now. It actually went pretty well. It was a great learning experience and it was very interesting to see how things panned out after all of our work was done. Although we did not quite get as many people out as we had hoped for, we had a great turnout and there was some great talent there to boot. Even as we were listening to the performers, we were recruiting more people to come in and sing. There were a lot of hoops to jump through, but when all was said and done, I think it was a success.

Troy Oldham's Week 9 Post #2

A few days ago the CEO’s of Ford, GM, and Chrysler flew into Washington DC to ask for a $25 billion bail out. The amazing part is—all three flew in on private jets! They went to plead their case that they are running out of money yet still use these jets worth millions and millions of dollars! They definitely could have used a PR advisor telling them it would look a lot better for their case if they flew in coach, or at the very least, first class! You’d think companies would learn that lesson after AIG big wigs got such a bad reputation by going on an extravagant “company retreat” just after receiving a huge bail out from the government.

Troy Oldham's Week 9 Post #1

I think something that we need to have someone take care of is some PR for the government. We need someone that can make us look a little better to the rest of the world. We are having some serious issues on how we are perceived by others. It would also be helpful for this PR person to give some ideas on how we fix the unrest with the economic situation. I think it would go a long way in helping to boost morale.

Group Prospectus Draft

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Organization is "the nation's leading youth mentoring organization", striving to "reach local children who need a Big Brother or Big Sister." Volunteers spend a few hours each month with their "littles", playing games, getting ice cream, or other such activities. Any money spent comes from the volunteers themselves. We would like to offer a special activity for "bigs" and their "littles" to share in a day of fun and adventure at Lagoon. There are currently *** volunteers and *** children enrolled in our organization, and we would like to get them into Lagoon for one day for free. It would be sure to be a day the children talk to with their friends and families, spreading the word about the park, as well as a day for the volunteers to enjoy, increasing the likelyhood that they would revisit the park with their friends.
(this is a draft, we have a lot of work to do)

Troy Oldham's Week 8 Post #2

Utah State just fired their football coach, Brent Guy, today. I was thinking that we really need a rockin' PR campaign targeting coaches. I don't know very many people that are jumping at the opportunity to be the head coach of one of the lowest ranked football teams in the country. I am not sure exactly how to go about it. You might want to target current assistant coaches and coordinators. You might also consider targeting current high school coaches that are looking for a chance to prove themselves. I don't think that they will hire anyone without college coaching experience, but I think it might be just what the program needs to get going. Either way, we seriously need to figure out how we can get a winner in here, and fast.

Troy Oldham's Week 8 Post #1

We are in the midst of our final group projects for Preston's class and it is getting to be pretty intense. We have already cranked out PSAs and not were working on a 4-page prospectus. I am not exactly sure what this has to do with PR, but if this is what I would have to do in an agency then this is not the route for me. I do not enjoy this aspect of it at all. I will probably pay other people to come in and do these sorts of presentations for my company rather than spend the time to put it together myself.

Troy Oldham's Week 7 Post #2

A few weeks ago, we had the PRSSA banquet and the managing director of public relations came and spoke to us. It was interesting to me to see someone that had a talent for dong public relations who was doing PR for something that she had interest in before. She always liked rockets and space and what not, so she went out and found a great company where she could do exactly what she wanted for the perfectly fitting company. It makes me think that if I really work for it, I can land a similar job doing PR in something that I really like. We will just have to see.

Troy Oldham's Week 7 Post #1

We have been working on the PR for Kurt Bestor's Best Singer search. It has been quite the hands on project. I wrote a press release, then we took that around to all of the schools in the valley. We are getting ready for the actual competition on the 20th. I am super nervous to see how well it worked and see how many people actually show up. I think it is a pretty cool activity so I hope that a lot of people will at least come and watch the singers perform. Who knows, maybe I will make a surprise stage appearance.

Troy Oldham's Week 6 Post #2

Tuesday will be the day that marks the end of this terms' elections. There has been a lot of PR going on in behalf of the politicians and propositions. We will see who had the better PR skills, I guess. Or who was better looking, or who was younger, or whatever the Americans decided to base their votes on. I didn't watch really any TV during the elections to see what things were used to get the right kind of attention, but I heard enough about it that I am more than ready for it to be over with.

Troy Oldham's Week 6 Post #1

Last week I received an email from Troy in regards to an opportunity to write for the Hard News Cafe. While it isn't PR per se, it is through the department. I contacted Mike Sweeney and let him know I was interested. He had me bring in a few of my writing samples and he either thought they were ok, or no one else was interested because he selected me to cover all the men's basketball team home games. Not that I have time in my week to do it, but I will make time. This will give me a chance to write about things that I actually care about and build my portfolio.

Troy Oldham's Week 5 Post #2

I mentioned in last week's blog that I thought getting involved in sports PR would be a blast. I think my first client should be Isaiah Thomas. He is a walking PR nightmare. He is always getting into trouble and saying the most outrageous things. If he had any idea what a fool he is making out of himself he would pay me some of his millions to help him not look like an idiot. Add that to the fact that is one of, if not the, worst coaches ever to coach in the NBA. I also contacted my old high school's principal to see what the chances are that I could get involved in coaching basketball at the high school myself. I think I could really turn that program around.

Troy Oldham's Week 5 Post #1

This week we got into our groups for the final project. I am pretty excited about it. We are actually working with a real-life situation. We are in charge of Bestor's Best Singer Search. He is coming to Logan in a couple weeks so we don't have a long time. This is great experience because we are working with a PR company from the Salt Lake area and we have a super tight deadline. I was amazed by the people in my group. They all seem to know people that can help us out. We are teaming up with the Independent Music Club to do this. We are also going to try and get the music department involved as well. I think it is going to be a hit.

Troy Oldham's Week 4 Post #2

If I were to go on in my career and pursue a PR job, I would probably try and get on with a company that is up and coming. One that I found (probably a lot of other people found too) is Taylor. Although they did win the 2008 US Agency of the Year Award, they also won The Holmes Report's Midsize Agency of the Year award two consecutive years. This tells me that not only are they good at what they do, but they can only go up from here. Soon enough they will become one of the big agencies. This would probably be the ideal time to get on with a company like that. They deal in the sports and entertainment industries as well. It would be a fun place to work and never a dull moment.

Troy Oldham's Week 4 Post #1

As this assignment goes on, I continue to find more interesting things out about Public Relations. I don't know why it took me until now to start looking at public relations in sports, but I found a great website today that talks about what someone would do in sport with public relations. The website is http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/fall01/latimer/. He lays out four areas that you could work in: Player Relations, Community Relations, Media Relations and Investor Relations. I would love to be involved with sports-centered public relations. In fact, I plan on being a high school coach and I will learn some skills that will help me to get the publicity and funds for a fun time on the basketball team.

ICON HEALTH AND FITNESS TO SEND USU GRADUATE TO CHINA

ICON Continues To Offer Great Work Experience For Students

Taylor Price will finish his last three credits towards graduation online as he and his wife moved to China on Monday to start his new job as a manager.

Each year, Icon employs more students and gives them opportunities to prove themselves. Price did just that as he worked for Icon for two years, while going to school, before they decided to send him overseas. It is not just Price that has excelled while going to school. Many others have taken on the rigorous task of going to school and working full-time.

Icon Health and Fitness is one of the largest employers in the Cache Valley area and they continue to provide valuable, real-life experiences to students. Icon is flexible with students and willing to work around classes and homework to allow for ambitious students to better themselves.

Many start in areas such as customer service or product testing. Promotions are given to those that perform well and extensive benefits are available to those that work more than 30 hours a week. Along with the benefits, there are perks on the side; anything from discounted Jazz tickets to ski passes. There are company parties and retreats as well. Last year, Icon rented out Lagoon for the day and held the company party there.

While Price’s journey is only just beginning, many others can experience the same ride.

Job openings and internships are posted regularly on their website www.iconfitness.com.

Troy Oldham's Week 3 Post #2

Today I wanted to talk about why I wish that schools would require people to take at least one PR class. I found this on www.aboutpublicrelations.com. "When sending ideas via email, always include a short, pithy pitch along with your contact information. It is important to make the reporter’s job as easy as possible so make sure to provide the most important news in the first paragraph." Even if it does not deal with a reporter, this is the appropriate way to communicate. I feel like I have so many things going on in my life that I do not want to take the time to read through lengthy garbage. I want all the good, important stuff right up front. If everyone lived by this one principle of PR, then the whole world would be more efficient.

Troy Oldham's Week 3 Post #1

We had Tim Brown, from Richter 7, come and speak to our class on Thursday. I thoroughly enjoyed what he had to say. Not only was he very personable and entertaining, he also taught us a lot of valuable things. He talked a lot on internships and how to screw them up. Even though I do not have an internship right now, I was able to take what he said and apply it to where I work right now. I started a few months ago and I was really excited. The novelty has since worn off. While I still go in on time and get everything done on time, I have definitely had an attitude change. I need to work on that. I don't ever want my employer to think that I have given up or that I am getting a bad attitude on anything like that. He talked a lot about what PR is like at an agency. If I didn't already know what I want to do with my career, I think I would really enjoy working for them, or any other agency for that matter.

Shane Kreb's Reading Week of Oct. 12

I read the Conversational Terrorism one and thought to myself, who in the world has time to come up with stuff like this? I hope they got paid. There were a couple that were pretty funny, but I just like to tell it how it is. If I don't know the answer, I dont need to give myself time to make something up. I am also not in to the game of making other people feel stupid. I have a lot better things to do than to argue with people. The link bombing article was kind of funny in the same way. Someone with nothing better to do than to try and make someone else look stupid. While it may have been effective, what a waste of time. Those are my thoughts on the articles.

Troy Oldham's Class Week 2 Post #2

I haven't fully figured out how to navigate this PRNewsonline website, and maybe it's because I am not a member, but it doesn't seem to have much action at all. I found just one blog on there by a gal named Diane, and I only see posts from her once a week to twice a week. The comments are just as sparce. I just found another blog on there and nothing has been written on it for over 4 weeks. I believe that there is a bright future in PR, but it just doesnt seem like there is that much information out there on it. It seems to get burried behind a lot of other career choices. I did find one interesting point that Diane Schwartz made, "Have social media sites made people less friendly in person and more friendly online? To me, the scene was representative of the new Web 2.0: most people come to social media sites and soak in the information before them but don’t participate. And there’s the vocal minority who keep the conversation flowing and want to be heard. The more things change, the more they stay the same, when it comes to human nature." Kind of interesting to think about. And it seems oh so true.

Troy Oldham Week 2 Post #1

We talked in one of my classes the other day about jobs in PR. With the way the market is going, it is kind of scary that we may all graduate and not have jobs. My professor assured me that this is an area that is supposedly in high demand. I looked on prweekjobs.com and only found 20 in the whole country. NOw I know that this is not the only website that has job postings, but 20 on a PR site in the whole country is not very optimistic. Luckily I don't plan on going into the PR field as a career, I only majored in it so I could learn all the valuable things that are taught that pertain to writing and communication.

(Troy Oldham) Week 1 post #2

I went to PRNewswire today to look at some news on the PR scheme. I found it interesting that on the front page they had a link to a press release that looked very similar to what we have been writing in one of my other JCOM classes. It was missing a lot of the things that we are strictly kept to doing in that class, but for the most part it was right up our alley. A lot of the press releases on that website were about bailouts with foreclosures and banking. It was interesting that they only had about 15 articles that were posted today. I guess I just figured that they would have a lot more than that. Maybe it’s because it is Sunday. I think that I will continue to follow this website as the semester continues and see what other interesting things I can learn from it.

PRNEWS(Troy Oldham)

I found the funniest article on a blog about PR today. It was basically this guy that has been involved in PR for years and years telling the world how easy it is to do PR. He then goes on to chastize journalists, and I quote: "To journalists . . . don’t be so full of yourselves, stop being so snooty . . .and remember - - it’s a two way street. We can’t put bread on the table without you and you can’t put bread on the table without us! Enough said." Apparently he has some qualms with journalists that he has worked with in the past. The most ironic part of the whole article is in the first paragraph though. "Just to put things in context . . . I have been working in public affairs for close to forty years going back to my Armed Forces Network days after combat in Vietnam. I’ve worked with major corporations and now the federal government and consider myself in the top 20% for sure . . . .professionally." If that is not blowing your own horn, I don't know what is. So to him I say stop being snooty.

While I agree with many that the Public Relations degree should be part of the school of business, I can definitely see why putting it in the journalism department better prepares you as a writer in the field of PR. I have improved drastically in my writing in just the 3 short semesters of the program.

JCOM 2160 Google Articles

Isn't it interesting to find out that internet companies are just as shady as the ones we deal with face to face. Infact, it is apparently easier to be discrete on the internet, which makes sense. I find it hard to beleive that Google will really come upon a rainy day when they need all of those search histories. Luckily for me I do not have anything to hide. I think that most people would agree that they also do not have anything to hide, but that doesn't make it any more comforting to know that they sace all of the searches that have ever been done. Hopefully Yahoo will hook up with all the phone companies and thwart the man at Google. If for nothing else, the fact that cable TV and high-speed internet will be more affordable. I like the sound of that.

PRSSA/PRSA

I recently joined the PRSSA in hopes of meeting people that will someday be beneficial in the future. After joining, I decided that it would be best to know more about what expectations the PRSA has and some of the values that they hold. At first glance I immediately thought of the Boy Scouts of America. They have a lot of the same values, or at least similar ones. It is nice to know that there are people out there in the business world that stick to values. I find those people quite fewer and farther between at this point in my career. I think the thing that I find most important is the emphasis on accountability. If there is no accountability then you could write whatever you wanted without repercussions. This would slowly (or quickly)taint the industry and ruin the reputation of writers in general. I also really like that they promote healthy competition. Isn't that what makes us better? I know in sports that I only got better when I was pushed, either in practice or by playing the best teams. If you do not have to compete, then you are not getting better. If you are not getting better, you are wasting your time.

Email Etiquette

I found it intersting to read those articles and see all of the not so proper things that I have been guilty of doing for a long time. Most of the things that I have always done never crossed my mind that I shouldn't be doing them. I used to cc: people on all of the emails I sent at my job last semester. I just recently started using the bcc: so as to not confuse those that I am sending the actual email to. Other than emails, I don't spend much time on the internet. I do not enoy going into chat rooms or instant messaging people. However, the information in those readings about emails will be very beneficial to me as I go forward in business. I will definitely implement a written email policy when I start my own company. I have always felt that acting and dressing professionally was important to your success but I had never considered how important it was to be professional in the way email correspondence takes place. I will pay a lot more attention to how I use email in the future for personal and professional use.

Gatten made this type of trust affordable to people in the middle class who could not have afforded it when the government implemented it in the 20th century. “We have a solution for those people that think they can’t afford to get into a new home,” Parker said.
Investors have a options as far as how they want to invest the money in this process, one of which is to purchase the home. They buy it at fair market value where the resident can’t afford it and can expect a return of 10-20% in two to three years.
The real estate and lending markets have not been in this deep of a recession since the Great Depression. ABC Realty looks to solve this problem and help the country out of this recession.
ABC Realty was started by Preston Parker in January of 2008. They followed suit of another mortgage company in Salt Lake.

Letter To My Cousin

Public relations is not nearly as complicated as it may sound, but do not underestimate the importance of it. There are many different areas that someone with a public relations background may do, but for the most part, they facilitate communication between the organization that they represent and all the publics that the given organization works with. A public may be anyone from those that work within the same organization to customers, and everything in between. They know the ins and outs of the organization and tend to be skilled in explaining it to those not so familiar with it in a way that can be understood. They also work to make things sound catchy and be informative. Professionals in the field of public relations may write press releases or articles and often times be asked to sort things out in person. In today's society, many professionals will also be involved in marketing type things as well.
